I sometimes get questions about Dengue fever and here are the most common questions and my answers:
Is there any Dengue fever in Langkawi / Malaysia?
Yes there is. it has increased the latest couple of years. What I know there was only 3 people reported to die with Dengue Fever in Langkawi tho so it is not commmon. In Malaysia the deaths from Dengue tripled during 2014. 250 people in Malaysia is reported being infected each day. From January to 4 December 2014, there have been 98,128 cases compared with 37,698 cases in 2013. From January to 13 September 2014, there were 136 deaths – more than triple the same period last year.
Can you vaccinate against Dengue?
No you can not vaccinate. All you can do it be aware that the dengue mosquito are active at day. They like the shade so your legs under a table, for example, might be at risk.
What can I do to prevent it?
Make sure you have NO still water in or around your house (as much as you can control). The Aedes aegyptimosquito can put their eggs in as little as a couple of drops of water.

What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.
How fast do I show symptoms?
One bite is enough to infect a person. The virus usually takes five to eight days to incubate before symptoms begin to appear.
What do I do if I show symptoms?
Please contact the nearest hospital as fast as you can. The hospital in Langkawi is just outside of Kuah.
WIll I die if I get Dengue?
The fatility rate is lower than 1% so probably not. If you get any of the symptoms please contact a clinic immidiately.
