Katmandu, Nepal

Katmandu was thought to be Shangri-La. They have generally no street names in there, only the bigger roads got names. So if you are going to a specific address you will get the address to the closest corner, where there usually is a market.

Once known as ‘Kantipur’, Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is the political capital and a cultural one as well. Nestled within a large valley, it enjoys a pleasant climate second to none and is a relatively safe place to live. Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade and the hustle and bustle is typical, yet the people remain as refreshingly friendly as ever. The old, fabulous palaces, the superbly crafted pagodas and the monumental stupas are reminders of the Golden age of architecture in Nepal. And rightfully, the Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath have been enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Monuments.Thamal is the tourist district and here is good to eat and drink at reasonably pricec.

Things to se, except the sceenery;

  • Swayambhu – A large stupa, highly revered in Nepal, and one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the country. It offers great views over the city, and no lack of monkeys. It’s a 20-30 minute walk from Thamel, or take a taxi or rickshaw. Pay Rs 100 (Rs.200 as of July 2010)
  • Baudha Stupa in Baudha . One of the most sacred sites for Tibetan Buddhism. It is a must see in Kathmandu.
  • Narayanhiti Palace Museum – The once Royal palace was turned officialy in 2009 partly into a Museum and the Foreign Ministry.
  • Thamel Chowk – lots of restaurants and shops.
  • Freak Street – Historic home of western hippies seeking enlightenment, but now just a few restaurants and hotels.
  • Nasal Chowk Statues, temples and the Rana museum.
  • Pashupatinath – An important temple to Shiva in the form of Lord of Animals. See monkeys, cremation, sadhus and a holy cave. Morning is a great time to go.
  • Garden of Dreams – Relax in this beautiful and peaceful walled garden close to the former Royal Palace. Entry Rs 160.

Don’t: drink the water or eat anything been rinced in water from tap, it borders to lethal.

Vaccinations for rabies, tetanus, typhoid, and hepatitis are recommended prior to arriving in Kathmandu, and can take several months to complete. Tropical diseases such as Japanese encephalitis should be vaccinated against if you plan to travel outside of the Kathmandu Valley, towards the lowlands in the Terai. You may wish to take a malarial prophylaxis

Plenty of internet cafes and some hotels offers wifi, sho we should be able to blog from there as well!
