Eat & Drink
Of course there are many places where you can eat and drink in Langkawi and here are a few of the gems I found:
Champor Champor. A mix (Champor means mix) of flavours and dishes from all over, indian, portugal, malaysian food. Not too expensive. Friendly staff and a new bar on the street with cheap beers. Basically in the middle of Pantai Cenang. On the beach side of the street. CLOSED!
Wood´s is a bar on Pantai Tengah, reasonable prices, excellent indian food and a bustling bar. OPen all night if there is a crowd, often with Live music.
Lepak Bar in Pantai Cenang and I like it! The staff is extremely friendly and you always feel welcome here.
Scarborough Fish & Chip is a great restaurant to eat on your way back from Tanjung Rhu. Delicious and freshly prepared food. In Ayer Hangat.
Nasi Kandar tomato is a buffe restaurant – malay style. They serve fresh and cheap food. If you prefer you can order from the a la carte menu instead. Located next to Aseanian Hotel out of Pantai Cenang.
The newly openend My Chef in Kuah serves very good malaysian food for reasonable prices.
Of course there is nigh markets as well In Langkawi, mainly there is plenty of food and fruits. The markets are located on different places in different days. Read more about the night market [Here].
There is plenty of bars in Cenang / Tengah if that is what you are looking for. from north to south: Kalut, Thirstday, Cinnamon, Lepak, Sugar, Nest on the beach, Bam-Boo-bas , Budaba, The Woods.
There is a lot of wild animals in Langkawi but it is easy to avoid the dangerous ones.. Except for the mosqitoes. Make sure you are protected when you are sleeping (net, fumakilla and other gear to keep your room clean) and wear protection when you go out. Yes in daytime too, since the mosquitoes that is active during daytime is the ones that is spreading dengue fever.
Langkawi has plenty of snakes but during my 3+ years here I only seen 3.
Monkeys are easy to find on the roads. I have seen quite some monitor lizards and believe me, they are HUGHE! Also wild dogs roam the jungle, crocodiles in the mangroves, wild boars also in the jungle and lots of eagles.
Visit the buffalo farm to see the buffalo closer and try the buffalo meat.
Wildlife park is a excellent choice for the families who wish to interact with the animals.
It is fairly safe at Langkawi, just be aware that when you are out walking the streets wear your valuables in a backpack, a pocket on your belly or on yourself. There has been some thiefs targeting single western women with handbags over one shoulder.
If you get sick, there is two medical clinics close to Pantai Cenang. One is on Pantai Tengah as is called Mahsuri Clinic and the other is opposite of Cenang Supermarket and is called Cenang Clinic. They are both private but it is not expensive to visit the doctor i Langkawi. There is also a hospital between Kuah and Pantai Cenang, on the highway.
Call police: 999, Ambulance of firebrigade: 994
