Train from Lhasa to beijing

We will be taking the train from Lhasa to Beijing on our trip.

Trivia: This is the railway that travels on the highest altitude (5.072 meters) in the world and there is oxygen added into the air in the train. The journey is 4064 kilometers long (Sweden is 1572 kilometers from north to south). Starting from Lhasa at 13:45 (day 1) and arriving in Beijing 08:00 (day 3). A soft sleeper ticket costs about 1.200 RMB/CNY (about the same in Swedish  krona) per person. Se many pictures here.  550 kilometers of the tracks is constructed on perma frost. 960 kilometers of the tracks are locadet on 4000 meters altitude or more.

The windows in the train has a UV-filter and a sealed in order to not litter the eco-system in Tibet.

In order to take this train you need a visa to China and a permti to visit Tibet (cost= 60 RMB/CMY).

Are you shorter than 120 cm you will travel for free and 150 cm you travel for half price. (Lajke, maybe you can bend your knees some? And deffinately no high heels!)

I have a serious problem here, everytime i start researching or writing about this I get a bit excited and tears are filling my eyes. I know it’s stupid but this is ”once in a lifetime” and so special.

Link: Much good information here, Seat61 (of course), Treehuggers, resebloggen, AB on Lhasa,

One alternative here is to get off at Xián and take the flight the rest of the way. Looks to be about the same cost and then we get a chance to visit the terracotta soldiers.  (12 hrs shorter train ride)

In the research for this journey I also stumbled upon the information that there might be a bus going weekly between Lhasa and Kathmandu. Price should be about 520 RMB/CMY. A distance of 955 kilometres.  Yay!

The borders to Tibet is closed now and then. Last time was the 7th of march 2011 but it was opened agin early april.
